How to License an API

Define access and distribution
Internal integration, commercial embedding and resale are different rights. If your product exposes the API to customers, ask for explicit OEM or sublicensing terms and clarify whether your own branding is permitted.
Calculate the full price
Compare base fees, per-request charges, overages, minimum commitments and the cost of testing environments. Record rate limits and throttling behavior so you can estimate costs at the volume you expect.
Plan for reliability and exit
Confirm uptime commitments, versioning and deprecation notice, security responsibilities, data ownership and an export or migration path if the agreement ends. Verify claims with the provider's documentation.
